Stepper Motors by Type

We build three main types of stepper motors — 2-phase, 3-phase, and closed loop. The 2-phase hybrid is our highest-volume product, covering NEMA 8 through NEMA 42. If your application needs lower vibration at higher speeds, go with 3-phase. If you need position feedback and anti-lost-step protection, the closed loop series is the right fit.

2 Phase Stepper Motor

2 Phase Stepper Motor

Our most popular line. 1.8° step angle, NEMA 8 to NEMA 42, suitable for most industrial and commercial positioning applications.

3 Phase Stepper Motor

3 Phase Stepper Motor

1.2° step angle, smoother motion, lower vibration and higher torque at mid-to-high speeds. Available in NEMA 23 to NEMA 51.

Closed Loop Stepper Motor

Closed Loop Stepper Motor

Hybrid stepper motor with built-in encoder. Prevents lost steps, runs cooler, and improves efficiency in demanding applications. NEMA 23 to NEMA 42.

Product Features

Cymotorix hybrid stepper motors use a rotor-stator structure that combines permanent magnets with toothed iron cores. This design delivers high torque density in a compact frame. Step angle accuracy is within ±5%, and insulation resistance reaches 100MΩ minimum at 500VDC. Operating temperature range covers -20°C to +50°C.

· 1.8° and 0.9° step angles (2-phase), 1.2° step angle (3-phase)
· Holding torque from 0.01 N·m to 28 N·m
· 4-wire, 6-wire, and 8-wire lead configurations
· CE and RoHS certified

Customization Services

We handle most customization in-house without outsourcing. Over 70% of our stepper motor orders involve some level of modification. You send us a drawing or specification, and our engineers confirm feasibility — typically within 24 hours. Custom samples are ready in 10–15 working days.

· Mechanical: shaft, flange, mounting hole, lead wire exit direction
· Electrical: winding voltage, current, insulation class, connector type
· Integration: encoder, gearbox, brake, or driver mounted as a unit
· Branding: your logo printed on motor body, custom packaging and labels

Shaft Customization

Shaft modification is our most common customization request. We adjust shaft diameter, length, and end type based on your mechanical coupling requirements. Standard output is single-shaft, but double-shaft output is available for applications that need rear-end encoder mounting or dual-load drive.

· D-cut flat shaft
· Keyed shaft (single or double keyway)
· Gear shaft (spur or helical)
· Hollow shaft for through-wire or through-tube applications
· Custom shaft diameter and length to your drawing

Motor Construction

Each stepper motor consists of a front and rear end cover, stator assembly, rotor assembly, output shaft, and lead wires. The stator carries multiple phase windings wound on laminated silicon steel cores. The rotor combines a permanent magnet ring with toothed iron caps to create the hybrid structure. Bearings are pressed into the end covers and support both radial and axial loads.

· Stator: laminated silicon steel core with precision-wound copper coils
· Rotor: permanent magnet + toothed iron caps (hybrid structure)
· Bearings: ball bearings rated for 20,000+ hours
· Housing: black anodized aluminum or painted steel

FAQs

What is a hybrid stepper motor?

A hybrid stepper motor combines permanent magnet and variable reluctance structures in one rotor design. The rotor has a permanent magnet sandwiched between two toothed iron caps. This gives hybrid motors higher torque, better step accuracy, and finer step resolution than pure PM or VR stepper motors. Most industrial stepper motors on the market today are hybrid type, with standard step angles of 1.8° (200 steps/rev) or 0.9° (400 steps/rev).

What NEMA sizes do you offer?

We offer a comprehensive range of NEMA standard sizes for stepper motors, including NEMA 8, 11, 14, 17, 23, 24, 34, and 42, covering frame sizes from 20mm up to 110mm to meet diverse application requirements.

Can you customize the motor shaft and winding?

Yes, we offer full customization on motor shaft configurations, including keyway, flat cut, different shaft lengths and diameters, as well as custom winding parameters such as voltage, current, and resistance to match your specific driver and application needs.

What is the difference between 2-phase and 3-phase stepper motors?

The main difference lies in step angle and performance: 2-phase stepper motors have a standard 1.8° step angle, making them widely used in general applications, while 3-phase models feature a 1.2° step angle, offering smoother operation, lower vibration, and higher torque stability, especially suitable for heavy-duty and high-precision scenarios.

How long does it take to get custom samples?

Custom sample lead time is typically 7 to 15 working days, depending on the complexity of your requirements, such as special shaft, winding, or other modifications; we can provide a more accurate timeline once we receive your detailed specifications.

Do your stepper motors come with drivers?

We offer both separate stepper motors and matched motor driver packages; you can purchase motorsalone or select a complete driver-motor combo that is pre-tested and optimized for plug-and-playconvenience.

Stepper Motor: Types, Working Principle & Selection Guide

A practical reference for engineers and procurement teams evaluating stepper motors for OEM applications.Covers motor types, how they work, key specifications, and how to select the right motor for your project.

What Is a Stepper Motor and How Does It Work?

A stepper motor is a brushless DC electric motor that divides a full rotation into a fixed number of equal steps. Each step corresponds to a specific angle — typically 1.8° for a 200-step motor, or 0.9° for a 400-step motor. The motor moves one step for each electrical pulse it receives from the driver.

Inside the motor, the stator has multiple sets of coil windings. When the driver energizes these coils in a specific sequence, the magnetic field rotates in discrete increments, pulling the toothed rotor along one step at a time.Because each pulse produces a fixed angular movement, the controller knows the rotor position simply by counting pulses — no feedback sensor required. This is called open-loop control.

Stepper motors are the go-to choice when you need accurate positioning at a reasonable cost. They are used in 3D printers, CNC machines, medical pumps, packaging lines, and thousands of other applications worldwide.

Three Main Types of Stepper Motors

Stepper motors are classified into three types based on rotor construction. Each type has different performance characteristics.

TypeRotor StructureStep AngleTorqueTypical Use
Variable Reluctance (VR)Soft iron, no magnets5°–15°LowSimple positioning, legacy equipment
Permanent Magnet (PM)Magnetized rotor7.5°–15°Low–MediumValve control, HVAC dampers
Hybrid (HB)PM + toothed iron caps0.9°–1.8°HighCNC, 3D printing, automation, medical

Hybrid stepper motors dominate the market, accounting for over 50% of global stepper motor sales. Theycombine the high torque of PM motors with the fine step resolution of VR motors. All stepper motorsmanufactured by Cymotorix are hybrid type.

2-Phase vs 3-Phase Stepper Motors

Hybrid stepper motors are further divided by the number of electrical phases- most commonly 2-phase and 3-phase.

A 2-phase stepper motor has two sets of windings and a standard step angle of 1.8°. It is the most widely usedconfiguration in industrial and commercial equipment. Simple wiring, broad driver compatibility, and the widestrange of available frame sizes make it the default choice for most applications.

A 3-phase stepper motor has three sets of windings and a step angle of 1.2°. The finer step angle andoverlapping phase excitation produce smoother rotation, lower vibration, and better torque performance at mid-to-high speeds. The trade-off is a slightly higher cost and fewer available frame sizes.

• Choose 2-phase for general-purpose positioning, prototyping, and cost-sensitive projects.

• Choose 3-phase for applications where vibration, noise, or high-speed torque are critical concerns.
